The Safety Research Institute is a scientific consultancy dedicated to applied biomechanical research and advanced forensic analysis. Operating from Boston and Atlanta, the Institute provides sophisticated injury analysis of traumatic events across the automotive, aviation, marine, and industrial sectors.

Our work encompasses the evaluation of on- and off-road vehicle and aviation crashes, as well as human safety analysis regarding industrial equipment, recreational products, slip-and-fall incidents, and sports-related trauma. By analyzing injury mechanisms and occupant kinematics through the lens of human tolerance and crash dynamics, the Institute identifies the key factors driving injury causation, demonstrating how specific forces translate into clinical trauma. Our methodology integrates biomedical engineering with the failure analysis of safety systems—including automotive seat belts, airbags, child restraints, and protective headgear—ensuring every evaluation is grounded in a precise understanding of human biomechanical response.

The Institute’s technical depth is anchored by Dr. Sri Kumar, a recognized expert in trauma biomechanics with over 30 years of experience and an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Formerly a faculty member in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Kumar collaborated with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to develop the industry-standard injury criteria used in modern crash test dummies. His body of work includes more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and three US patents. His research has contributed to federal safety regulations for NHTSA and NATO and is cited by the NTSB and the IIHS. Having directed the analysis of more than 5,000 real-world cases, Dr. Kumar brings unparalleled scientific depth and credibility to the evaluation of injury causation in complex traumatic events.
